Salad: A Healthy and Tasty Choice for the Hottest Days!

Salad

A salad is always an excellent choice: as a meal, accompaniment or even dessert, when it is made out of fruit. It comprises, almost always, a healthy and colourful combination and tastes particularly well in the spring and summer, during warmer days.

There are thousands of ingredients you can use to create your salad and it is not even mandatory to be a cold dish. The hot ones open up even more the range of possibilities and are also delicious varieties. The cold ones have the added bonus of being eaten anywhere.

At home, in a restaurant or even at the beach, a good salad is a simple and tasty way to introduce more vitamins and minerals into your diet.

A millennial dish

The origin of the word salad comes from salt, important and first seasoning of this type of meal. In fact, the first salads consisted only of wild vegetables and herbs, simply seasoned with salt. The dish was served as a tonic after the winter period, during which the diet was heavier and more substantial.

Its restorative and health-enhancing powers have been celebrated for millennia. There is even a Greek proverb that says “Τρώτε νεράιδα και κερδίστε νοημοσύνη!”, Which means “Eat watercress and gain intelligence!”.

Did you know that this dish had its origin in the year 600 b.C. and it was created by the Persians? In fact, salads have been part of the world’s gastronomy since ancient times. Over time, recipes have been evolving, by incorporating other ingredients and seasonings. The result, today, is an almost endless list of options, which fit the taste of the consumer.

Richer and more elaborate or simpler and lighter, the salad is, currently, synonymous with healthy food.

Imagination is the limit

Today, there are numerous possible variations for this dish. It can be simply composed of green leaves, various vegetables (cooked, sautéed or grilled) or even pasta (previously cooked). There are also mixed solutions, which combine all these ingredients, by adding meat, fish or seafood. Salads of tuna, chicken or shrimp delight everyone during light meals.

Able for consumption as a starter, garnishment or main dish, in some cultures, the salad is served at the end of the meal. In its preparation, you can use wide varieties of leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, watercress, chicory, spinach, arugula and fresh herbs. Also vegetables, previously cooked or grilled, can be an integrating part.

Use tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, beetroot and anything else you like! There are those who do not avoid adding olives, nuts or croutons, in order to provide crispness to the experience. In the end, just add the seasoning to your choice and wrap all the ingredients. This way, a light and simple dish is prepared, which is good for your body and also for your health.

The famous Caesar Salad

Certainly you have heard of Caesar salad. It will have been invented in Mexico by an Italian chef, almost 100 years ago. Today, it continues marking its presence in the most famous restaurants around the world.

Based on simple leaves of Romaine lettuce, it is the sauce that enriches it. Made out of anchovies, olive oil, lemon juice, egg and parmesan cheese, it provides the lettuce with a unique flavour. The finishing touch is the addition of croutons, small crunchy pieces of bread.
