Between the ria and the sea, Costa Nova’s beach is a place known for its colourful houses and its sandy beaches, but also, inevitably, for the quality of its fish and seafood, which make up the local cuisine. Take a trip along the waterfront with us and discover the three restaurants in Costa Nova, which you can’t miss.
Right on top of Costa Nova fish market’s building, you’ll find the restaurant Dóri, with a vast menu covering all tastes, when it comes to sitting at the table.
“Dóris” are small rowing vessels, similar to small boats, which were used in cod fishing, in which a fisherman would sail, in order to catch the best fish, by line. From this boat, they were taken into the main ship, milled, scaled and salted, so that they could continue their journey for several months, until they reach our coast. Right at the entrance of the restaurant, we can find an example of these boats.
The decoration of the space, marked by elements related to fishing, such as ropes used to tie up the boats, allows you to immerse yourself into a typical but refined atmosphere, which portrays the habits and everyday life of Costa Nova’s people.
The restaurant offers various rooms and terrace spaces, all of which overlook Ria de Aveiro, thus comprising a beautiful plan to accompany the house specialities, amongst which grilled fish is the star, accompanied by bread crumbs (migas). Fried fish, such as eels and cuttlefish, accompanied by cockle rice are other relevant choices. Any option brings along the flavour of the sea and the ria into a single plate, in this case, from Saturno collection.
This is one of the 3 restaurants in Costa Nova we recommend, being also classified as a Bib Gourmand establishment, by Michelin Guide.

Marisqueira da Costa Nova
On the same avenue, you can also find Marisqueira da Costa Nova, the oldest restaurant in the area, dating its licensing back to 1940. Even after all these years, the restaurant is still in the same family, with knowledge and flavours passed on, from generation to generation.
From the entrance, with seafood tanks, containing crabs, lobsters and rock lobsters, thus ensuring their freshness, to the dining room, we are transported to an atmosphere that remains faithful to the origins of the restaurant and to a service, that shows pride in belonging there.
With tables available inside and outside the building, overlooking the Costa Nova’s iconic striped houses, or, locally, the haylofts (palheiros) of Costa Nova, the variety of seafood and fish dishes is enormous, including popular stews (caldeiradas), such as eel stew. Adding to this variety, there is also Pote à Marinheiro (Sailor’s Stew), created in the house and which combines various traditions, such as rice, bean stew and seafood pasta, a dish that can only be found in this place, well portraying the flavours of Costa Nova’s Sea and estuary.

Restaurant Praia do Tubarão
Opened since February 14th, 1990, in one of Costa Nova’s colourful typical houses, Praia do Tubarão was settled for the purpose of providing visitors with something different from what was previously offered, thus having introduced the preparation of all dishes, individually and on the spot, according to costumers’ requests.
In fact, customers’ requests have been influencing the restaurant’s menu. One of the most renowned dishes, the stew (ensopado), nowadays of turbot or grouper, started to be made due to the visit of a regular customer who asked for something different for lunch, and was served a light sole stew, which began to be called as stew (ensopado). The dish has evolved and is, nowadays, a restaurant’s trademark.
Those who pass by Praia do Tubarão will not forget the homemade flavour of all the dishes, such as the stew (ensopado) and hake fillets, or, as portrayed in the gallery, the fish soup, the tiny horse mackerels (or, as they are locally called, jaquinzinhos), the Bulhão Pato’s-style clams and the eels’ stew, served in Agma collection’s pieces.
